Kids These Days
For years, since I sort of became an adult, I have heard people say that our country is going to hell because the “kids these days” are never gonna live up to their ancestors' dreams. As I’ve watched my kids grow up into the wonderful young men they’ve become and listened to their hopes and dreams, I knew that for me, I was in good hands with kids these days. And, this past week, that further got reaffirmed when I went to the Women’s College World Series here in Oklahoma City.
For those of you who have never attended a Women’s World Series, you might not understand the significance of what I experienced this year. You wouldn’t know that hundreds of young women and men attend this event from all over the country. You wouldn’t know that sometimes you are fortunate enough to sit next to and interact with these kids and that for the last week of May and beginning of June, these kiddos and their parents can become your softball family when you are fortunate enough to sit by a fun bunch of them. This year, I had the privilege of sitting next to the future of our country in the form of a boy from Alabama and some girls from Missouri and their parents. It is something I will never forget.
These kiddos aren't degrading the game. They weren’t being disrespectful to their elders and the flag and our national anthem. Instead, they were exactly the opposite. Standing up proudly for us vets, I watched the future of our nation as they clapped and cheered for us when we were recognized at the game. I sit next to them for a week listening to their lives and how important sports was to them. How they could cheer for a team from a different state than them just because two old ladies in front of them were from Oklahoma and tremendous Sooner fans. I joked and laughed with them, poking fun at them as often as I had the chance, and watched as they cheered for their favorite players they looked up to. And it was one of the most amazing moments of my life.
I’m not worried about the future of our country. I’m not worried that someday some other little girl or boy is gonna look up to them and try to imitate their lives. Folks, we’re in good hands. We’re still raising good Americans and there’s a bright hope for our future. Thanks kiddos. You made me smile, laugh, and enjoy sports in a way I never have before. I feel safe in the stakes you will hold in the future of our nation and I am proud to say I got to experience this wonderful event with all of you. Until next time, BOOMER SOONER!!!
